Limerick Museum

Overview

2h
Established in 1907 and opened in 1916, Limerick Museum is one of the oldest and largest local authority museums in the country. Its mission to collect, preserve and display objects relating to the history and heritage of Limerick city and county. It has over 62,000 objects in its collection, of which some are on display and the rest can be viewed on the online catalogue. Since 2017, it has been located at the Old Franciscan Friary, Henry Street, Limerick City. The story of Limerick city and county is presented through its objects, from Stone Age axes to medieval coins, from the civic sword of Queen Elizabeth I to medals presented to veterans of the 1916 Rising. Among the more unusual items are: the 450-year old mummified Ireton’s Cat; a 3 billion-year old fragment from the largest meteorite shower that ever fell in Ireland (which occurred in 1813) and two World War II gas-masks, that fortunately never had to be used.
