Youghal Clock Gate Tower

Within the medieval walls of the jewel, coastal town of Youghal lies the fascinating Youghal Gate Clock Tower. As the most visible landmark in the centre of Youghal Main Street, the tower has been inextricably linked with the surrounding landscape and community across more than 700 years of history. Today, visitors can move through the inner stairs of the four storey, 89 feet/24 metres high tower to learn about its diverse past as a local time-keeper, gaol and centre of trade. HISTORY | Led by an expert costumed guide, this iconic building’s story of love, generosity and friendship as well as pain, tragedy and rebellion are literally brought to life through a sensory experience that includes smelling the spices in the Merchants Quarters, touching silks, testing the bed and bathroom facilities in the gaol cell, reading the accounts of the gaolor and winding the enormous clock. FAMILY | Ending on an incredibly moving note, insights into the McGrath family are shared through John McGrath who explains what daily life was like- with all of its highs and lows- for his parents, brother and sisters who were the last residents of the tower. VIEWS | As an iconic building that simply keeps giving and giving, from a 5th floor platform, there is then an opportunity to marvel at the magnificent 360 degree views over Youghal Bay, Waterford, Youghal Lighthouse and Youghal town itself.
