Redwood Castle

Redwood Castle is an imposing 13th century Norman Castle set in the fertile plains of the river Shannon. Built by the de Cougans, a Norman family in 1210, it was occupied by the Kennedy clan and later by their Brehon lawyers, the MacEgans. Fully restored, Redwood Castle offers guided tours over four floors, including the Great Hall and the battlements. Redwood’s strategic position was of the utmost importance owing to its close proximity to the River Shannon. The Normans made several attempts to cross the Shannon and administer the west of Ireland, but settled with constructing a long line of castles and towerhouses along its eastern bank, Redwood castle being one of these. The original structure at Redwood was only two storeys tall, and there were no entrances or exits on the ground floor for security reasons. There is evidence that the original doorway was on the second floor, accessible by a drawbridge. The main entrance you see today dates from the mid-1300s.
