Michael Davitt Museum

Overview

1h
The Michael Davitt museum collection is housed in the magnificently restored pre-penal church in the subject’s home village of Straide, County Mayo. Davitt was baptised in this building during the great famine and is buried within the shadow of the church walls. The collection reflects his diverse range of national and international achievements in an awe-inspiring tale of triumph over adversity. The museum is adjacent to Straide Friary. This 13th century Norman structure contains some of the finest medieval sculpture on the island of Ireland.
