Burren Smokehouse

Overview

0h 20min
Call into the Burren Smokehouse Visitor Centre and retail space located in Lisdoonvarna just off the Wild Atlantic Way and a short drive from Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher. On storyboards, you can follow the Curtin Family through history and learn about the milestones they reached in the more than 30 years of their existence. The visitor centre is about discovering the secret of how smoked salmon is handcrafted. Enjoy mosaics that tell the story of the "Salmon of Knowledge" inside and outside the Smokehouse. Marvel at the nostalgic atmosphere in the visitor centre and smell the oak smoke as soon as you come through the door. Feel the rumble of the production facilities under your feet as you explore the retired kiln and smokebox that are on display. You will also follow in the footsteps of royalty! In May 2019, the Burren Smokehouse had the honour of a Swedish Royal visit. King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden came to the Burren Smokehouse to learn about artisan food production in the Burren, and to taste the Burren Smoked Irish Organic Salmon. Before this royal highlight, there were others. Queen Elizabeth II and almost 180 guests enjoyed our Smoked Wild Irish Salmon as a starter during the historic State Dinner in Dublin Castle in May of 2011, and then-Prince Charles received a side of their Burren Smoked Wild Irish Salmon when he visited the Burren for the first time ever in spring of 2015. You can combine your visit of the visitor centre with the “Taste the Atlantic – Salmon Experience” next door, book a “Salmon Smoking Masterclass” or even an exclusive “VIP Meet the Maker” tour with the owners of the Burren Smokehouse and the Roadside Tavern.
